SPATIAL DATABASE SPEED COMPARISONS
A reoccurring question regarding spatial databases is which spatial format and
which database engine to use. To determine the best configuration, data must be
processed in different scales, data densities and multiple types of vector data.
Another testing point is a comparison between hot and cold database buffer
caches. The goal of this paper is to show which configuration on a Microsoft
Windows platform may give the best performance.
This special report shows speed comparisons between the primary relational
databases supported by ArcSDE. The ArcSDE supported databases on the Windows
platform to be used in testing are: Microsoft (MS) SQL Server, Oracle Database,
and DB2. This report covers critical path areas including:
- Variables in Comparison including database cache, types of data and data
densities
- Charts of Speed Comparisons
- Cold Cache and Hot Cache
